I love fruit cobblers. They are so easy to make from scratch, typically requiring only a few pantry staples loaded into a casserole dish and baked to perfection.
For a great apple cobbler you want a biscuit-like topping that’s tender and slightly crumbly, and melds just right with the gooey-fruity goodness inside. Cinnamon and nutmeg combined with fresh apples creates a sweet, almost savory and incredibly comforting flavor that is perfect for fall… or anytime you want a taste of classic apple pie in a jiffy!
My Bisquick Apple Cobbler dessert is full of delicious apples and topped with an easy-to-make biscuit crumble for a simple, wholesome dessert the family will love. In fact it’s so simple, you can even prepare it while making dinner.
Choosing the Best Apples to Bake With
This recipe is wonderful because it is made with Bisquick and basic pantry items, plus you can use nearly any apple that’s available!
Generally, I use either Granny Smith or Honey Crisp apples when baking an apple cobbler, apple crisp, or apple pie. But, there are several varieties of apples that work well with this Bisquick Apple Cobbler.
Below I’ve listed descriptions of apples that you might want to include in your cobbler:
- Granny Smith Apples: crisp and tart, all purpose apple.
- Golden Delicious: mellow flavor balanced flavor, all purpose apple.
- Braeburn: firm, aromatic, sweet – tart, juicy apple.
- Pink Lady: crisp and tangy, with a balance of tart and sweet.
- Honey Crisp: crisp and sweet, with a hint of tart flavor.
- Jazz: tangy and sweet, with a crunch.
- Fuji: crisp, and super-sweet.

Ingredients for Bisquick Apple Cobbler
To make this easy, fall-tastic apple cobbler recipe you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Instant tapioca
- Cinnamon and nutmeg
For the most fluffy, flaky biscuit topping, I recommend that you use whole or 2% milk. The fat in these types of milk will help the biscuits to rise the best. You can use non-fat or lactose-free milk, but note that they won’t be quite as tender.
Baking suggestions: When using this apple cobbler recipe for Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples, use the full 3/4 cup of sugar. If using a sweet apple like Honey Crisp or Fuji, reduce the sugar to 1/2 cup, unless you like really sweet baked goods.
There is a gluten free version of Bisquick available that will make a delicious apple cobbler. All of the other ingredients in this recipe are also gluten free!
Yes, you can keep this cobbler in the freeze for up to 3 months in an airtight container. Bake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 30 minutes to reheat and enjoy.

How to Make the Best Apple Cobbler with Biscuit Topping
First, prepare the apple cobbler filling by combing apple slices with sugar, spices, and tapioca.
TFN Tip: To prepare apples quickly and effortlessly, use a sharp vegetable peeler. Just like knives, they dull over time. A sharp peeler will glide right over your apples or potatoes.
I also like to use an apple corer to easily core and slice the apples into wedges. Then I can easily slice the apple wedges into thin slices, like in the photo below.
You then want to let the apples sit for about 15 minutes to allow the tapioca enough time to “activate” and create the perfect cobbler consistency when baked.
While the coated apples rest, make the easy Bisquick biscuit topping by mixing together the Biquick, sugar, butter, and milk.

Load the apples into a greased casserole dish, and drop the biscuit mix by the spoonful on top. Bake for about 45 minutes, until the crust is golden and fruit filling is bubbling hot.

Bisquick Apple Cobbler
- Casserole dish
- vegetable peeler
- paring knife
- medium mixing bowl
- 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced in thin slices (see apples section for best baking apples)
- 3/4 cup sugar (use less for sweeter apples)
- 2 Tbsp instant or minute tapioca
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 cup Bisquick
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 Tbsp butter or margerine, melted and cooled
Prepare the apple filing
- In a medium bowl, mix apples, sugar, tapioca, and spices. Let sit for 15 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350º F. Pour apple mixture into a greased casserole dish.
Prepare cobbler topping
- Using the same bowl, stir together Bisquick, sugar, and butter until it has pea-sized lumps. Stir in the milk until just mixed.
- Using a tablespoon, drop onto the top of the apple mixture. Bake Apple Cobbler at 350º for 45-55 minutes, until it is golden on top and the apple filling is bubbling.
