Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
For the Wonton Cups
- Wonton wrappers – You can find wonton wrappers in the grocery store produce section. You can also order them from Walmart’s online grocery pickup just like I do. If you can’t find them, use gyoza wrappers or egg roll wrappers (cut in quarters) instead.
- Cooking spray – This will help keep the wonton cups from sticking to the muffin pan. You can also use regular oil instead. Just lightly coat the muffin pan using a brush then you’re good to go.
For the Jalapeño Popper Filling
- Bacon – You can use regular bacon or turkey bacon. If you don’t want to use bacon, you could substitute crumbled sausage or ground beef.
- Jalapeño peppers – You can completely remove for a mild flavor or leave some seeds in for a spicier appetizer.
- Cheese – We used shredded cheddar cheese for this recipe but you can also use a Mexican blend cheese or whatever type of shredded cheese you prefer. For an extra kick, try using different cheeses in the filling, like pepper jack cheese.
- Cream cheese – This will help make the filling creamy and delicious. Make sure to use softened cream cheese for a smoother mixture.
- Sour cream – This will add a nice tangy flavor to the filling. You can also use Greek yogurt instead.
- Garnish (Optional) – Add some chopped green onions or diced tomatoes sprinkled on top.
Equipment Used for Jalapeño Wontons

How to Make Jalapeno Popper Wonton Cups
Preheat the oven to 350 ºF.
Pan preparation. Spray a muffin tin with cooking oil. Then spray the bottom half of a shot glass or small glass with cooking oil.
Shape the cups. Lightly spritz the wonton wrapper with cooking spray. Place the sprayed side down over the center of the muffin cup then press inside.
🎯 TFN Pro Tip
Don’t have a shot glass? You can use your fingers in a pinch! Place the greased wonton wrappers above the muffin cup and starting in the middle, press down lightly, working the wrapper against the wall of the muffin cup.
Bake the cups. Bake the wontons for 10 minutes, or until lightly golden and crispy. Let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes before adding a filling and baking them again.
Making the Filling
Prepare the Ingredients. While the wontons are baking, prepare your filling. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the bacon, diced jalapeños, and cheddar cheese for sprinkling on top, set aside.

Serving Suggestions
These jalapeno cream cheese wontons are best served warm, right out of the oven. Serve with a dipping sauce on the side, if desired. I like to serve mine with ranch dressing or sour cream and chive dip. Enjoy!
I also like to serve these wonton cups as appetizers for Cinco de Mayo!
These are also best served with:
- A side of salsa
- Chunky guacamole
- Pico de gallo
- Chopped jalapenos on top (for garnish)
- Chopped green onions (for garnish)

Recipe FAQs
Remove the seeds and membranes if you want to remove the heat from jalapeño. This is where most of the heat is concentrated. You can also remove the stem, which will further reduce the heat.
Yes! You can make cream cheese jalapeno wontons up to a day in advance. Just store them in an airtight container in the fridge until you’re ready to bake.
Yes, cooking jalapeños will make them less hot. Roasting or grilling jalapeños will bring out a sweetness in them and reduce the heat. If you want to keep the heat, you can leave them raw.
You can also freeze these appetizers! Just place them on a baking sheet and freeze for about an hour, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag.

Jalapeno Popper Wonton Cups
Equipment
- shot glass or a 2" glass cup - (see equipment list above in post)
Ingredients
Wonton Cups
- 12 wonton wrappers (find them in the grocery store produce section)
- cooking spray
Jalapeno Popper filling
- 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled, divided (or 1/2 cup of bacon bits)
- 2 large jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped, divided (leave some seeds in for a spicier appetizer)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided (or Colby jack cheese)
- 4 ounces (1/2 cup) cream cheese softened
- ⅓ cup sour cream
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350ºF.
- Spray muffin pan with cooking oil. Spray the bottom 1/2 of the shot glass (or small glass) with cooking spray.
- Lightly spritz the wonton wrapper with cooking spray. Place the sprayed side down evenly over the muffin cup and press down inside. Use the shot glass to form the wonton wrapper to the muffin well sides. Do this with the rest of the wonton wrappers.
- Bake the wontons for 10 minutes, until golden and crispy, with little bubbles on them. Let the wonton cups cool in the pan for at least 5 minutes if storing for later. If filling immediately follow the remaining steps.
Jalapeno Popper filling
- While the wontons are baking, prepare your filling. Reserve 2 tablespoons each of the bacon, jalapeños peppers, and cheddar cheese and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the bacon, jalapeños, shredded cheese, cream cheese, and sour cream.
- Use a small spoon to drop about 1 tablespoon of the jalapeno filling mixture into the baked wonton cups. Sprinkle on the reserved cheddar cheese, bacon bits, then jalapeno peppers on top of the filling.
- Bake at 350ºF for 8-10 minutes, until the wontons edges are golden brown and the cheese filing has melted. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Air Fryer instructions
- To make these in an air fryer, use glass custard cups for the wonton wrappers, instead of a muffin pan. Bake at 325ºF, following the instructions above.
Notes
- You can find wonton wrappers in the grocery store produce section. Or, make things really easy and order them from Walmart’s online grocery pickup like I do!
- I recommend using a shot glass or a similar glass when making your wonton cups. It helps your wrappers align with the sides of the muffin cup wells. The wrappers shrink slightly during baking and this ensures there will be a wide enough area for the jalapeno popper filling in wonton cups.
- You can also freeze these appetizers! Just place them on a baking sheet and freeze for about an hour, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag.
Jalapeño popper wontons will be kept in the freezer for up to three months. To prepare it, bake the frozen wontons at 350ºF until warmed through, about 20 minutes.
