Ingredients and Substitutions
One of the best things about this Bisquick waffle recipe is its simple ingredient list. You likely have everything in your pantry already! Here’s what we use to make this:
- Bisquick baking mix: Use store-bought or make your own homemade Bisquick mix for full control over ingredients.
- Milk (or non-dairy milk): Whole milk works best, but almond, oat, or soy milk are great substitutes.
- Egg (beaten): Helps bind the batter and adds fluffiness.
- Vegetable oil or melted butter: Using butter will add a richer flavor, while vegetable oil helps retain moisture.
- Cooking spray: Helps prevent sticking and ensures your waffles cook evenly with a golden, crispy exterior.

Recipe Variations
This homemade Bisquick waffle mix recipe is a fantastic base, but you can easily customize it with different flavors and mix-ins. Here’s more fantastic ways to make this waffle:
- Gluten-free: Mix together 1 1/3 cups gluten-free Bisquick, 1 1/4 cups milk, 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, and 1 beaten egg, then follow the same cooking instructions.
- Chocolate chip: Stir ½ cup mini chocolate chips into the batter for a kid-friendly twist.
- Cinnamon sugar: Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 tablespoon sugar to the batter for extra warmth and sweetness.
- Savory goodness: Reduce the sugar and mix in shredded cheese, cooked bacon, or chopped herbs for a savory take.
- Berry treat: Fold in ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries, raspberries, or sliced strawberries before cooking.

How to Make the Best Bisquick Waffle Recipe
- Prepare the batter
In a mixing bowl, stir together Bisquick mix, milk, egg, and vegetable oil (or butter) until smooth. Do not overmix.
🎯 TFN Pro Tip
Don’t Overmix the Batter – A few lumps are okay! Overmixing can make the waffles dense instead of light and fluffy.

- Preheat & grease the waffle maker
Spray waffle maker with cooking spray to prevent sticking. You can also use a basting brush and spread additional oil onto the waffle maker if you do not have cooking spray. - Cook the waffles
Slowly pour batter into the center of the hot waffle maker. Close the lid and cook for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown.
Pouring too much batter into the center of hot waffle iron can cause it to overflow and create a mess. Stick to ½ cup of batter per waffle (or whatever your waffle maker recommends) and slowly pour it into the center for even spreading.

- Remove & keep warm
Carefully lift the lid and use tongs to remove the waffle. Place it on a baking sheet in a 170ºF oven to keep warm while cooking the rest.

- For crispy Bisquick waffles, cook them a little longer than the standard setting on your waffle maker. Also, using melted butter instead of vegetable oil in the batter can enhance crispiness.
- Want extra fluffiness? Add a pinch of baking powder to boost the waffles’ rise.

Serving Suggestions
This original bisquick waffle recipe compliments both sweet and savory toppings. For a classic breakfast, serve them with butter, maple syrup, and Cottage Cheese With Fruit. If you’re in the mood for something indulgent, top them with whipped cream, chocolate chips, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert-style waffle. For a savory flavor pair with bacon, scrambled eggs, or even fried chicken for a sweet and savory brunch favorite.

Recipe FAQs
Yes! Substitute 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water for a plant-based alternative. Check out our post about egg substitutes for baking.
Yes! Use almond, oat, or coconut milk instead of regular milk, and swap butter for coconut oil or vegan margarine.
You can make waffle pancakes using a skillet or griddle. Simply pour the batter onto a greased pan and cook like pancakes, flipping once golden brown.
Yes, you can bake Bisquick waffles in the oven, but they won’t have the same crispy texture as waffles made in a waffle maker. However, baking is a great option if you don’t have a waffle iron or want to make multiple waffles at once!
