Ingredients and Substitutions
- Active dry yeast- Yes, you really need 2 tablespoons of yeast! This recipe requires more yeast because of the quicker rise time. You can use instant yeast instead but I recommend mixing the warm water with the honey (to allow it to dissolve), then adding that and the yeast to the rest of the ingredients notes in step 1.
- Honey– The honey is a necessity for this recipe, the short rise time needs sugar to help the yeast rise. You can substitute the honey for 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- Egg– pull the egg out before starting this recipe, room temperature eggs help keep the dough warm for a quicker rise.
- Butter– you can swap for 1/3 cup of your preferred cooking oil
- All purpose flour- you can substitute for bread flour or swap half the all purpose flour for whole wheat flour

Equipment
- Large bowl
- Stand mixer (optional)
- 9×13 baking sheet

🎯 TFN Pro Tip
In a pinch for time, you can let the dough rise for as little as 10 minutes in a warm location, but we have found the best rise time is around 15 minutes.

Recipe FAQs
You will know your dough is ready when it begins to feel smooth, like the inside of your cheek, be tacky but not sticky, and be able to stretch it for several inches without tearing.
Don’t over bake them- remove from the oven when they are a light golden brown. You can also brush the rolls with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven to help keep them soft. When storing, keep them in an airtight container to help keep them from drying out.
Honey or sugar is a necessary ingredient for this recipe. The quick rise time means the yeast needs a little help from the sugar. Plus, the slightly sweet taste of the rolls makes them irresistible!
