Why Rolling The Dough is Important
Rolling out or stretching the dough properly is essential for a great pizza. Because, it is not the right size and shape, it won’t bake correctly.
So, we are here to help you with this easy tutorial and pro tips on how to roll and stretch the pizza correctly. This way, you can have a delicious and perfectly cooked crust.
🎯 TFN Pro Tip
To keep your flour fresh for making homemade pizza, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard. Always use a clean, dry scoop to avoid introducing moisture.

How to Roll Out or Stretch
- Warm the pizza dough.
Before you start rolling out it, it’s important to ensure it’s warm enough. Working with warm dough makes it much more malleable and easier to roll out.
Cold dough is hard to work with, so you should let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before proceeding.
- Dust the countertop and dough with flour.
Prepare your work surface by dusting it with a little flour. This will help keep it from sticking to the surface. A lightly floured surface will also help the rolling pin grip the dough.
Now lightly dust the top off with flour as well. This will prevent any sticking between the rolling pin and the dough.

- Gently roll out the pizza dough.
Place the ball on the floured surface and press down lightly with your hands to create a flat disk.
Start using the rolling pin in the middle of the dough. Roll it outwards. Apply pressure evenly as you go. After each roll, turn the dough a quarter turn to make sure it is being rolled out evenly.
Keep rolling it out until it is about 1/4-inch thick. If it starts to stick to the rolling pin, sprinkle a little flour over it.
- Transfer the dough to a pan.
Once it is rolled out, carefully pick it up and put it on a pan or baking sheet.
If you want a raised edge on your crust, you can fold the edges of the dough over and press down gently to create a rim.
Pro Tips For Stretching and Rolling
- Use a light hand when flouring the surface and rolling pin.
Too much flour can dry it, making your kitchen dusty. - Don’t overwork the dough.
Rolling it too much will make it tough to handle. - If the edges of the dough start to tear, pinch them back together gently.
- For a thicker crust, roll it out to 1/2-inch thick.
- Take your time when you are stretching.
Do not try to rush the process. The dough might become too thin or have bumps if you go too fast. - Perfection is not necessary!
Do not worry about your crust not being perfect. If it is not a perfect circle or has a few imperfections, that is okay. These imperfections will make your crust look more homemade and rustic, which some people might like.
