Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
There are 4 ingredients plus common spices you need to make classic Bisquick chicken tenders from scratch. Nothing fancy here!
They are made with fewer ingredients than what you’d find in a bag of frozen nuggets. Plus there’s a LOT more fresh flavor in this homemade chicken.

To make the Bisquick ultimate chicken fingers you need:
- Bisquick mix – If you don’t have Bisquick mix, check out our DIY baking mix recipe.
- Grated parmesan cheese – Use freshly grated parmesan cheese and not the canned variety.
- Seasonings – garlic salt (or garlic powder + a pinch of salt) and paprika.
- Chicken tenderloins– boneless, skinless chicken tenders work best for this recipe. But, you can use chicken breasts cut into strips if that’s what you have available.
- Eggs – eggs help to bind the coating together and also add moisture to ensure tender chicken fingers so be sure to include them.
- Melted butter – melted butter helps to create a crunchy, golden crust. But you can use oil if you prefer.

How to Make the Best Baked Chicken Tenders
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees, or preheat your air fryer to 425 degrees.
Prepare the Bisquick chicken nuggets:
First, add the beaten egg to a small, deep tray or plate. In a plastic 1-gallon resealable bag or tray, combine Bisquick mix, parmesan cheese, and spices. Seal and shake to mix.
Dip the chicken tenders into the egg pan, then place them into the resealable ziplock bag with coating. Seal the bag and shake so that the chicken fingers get evenly coated in the Bisquick mixture.
Then, re-dip the chicken strips in the egg again, and shake them in the Bisquick mixture. This gives you the crispiest coating ever!
Transfer the chicken tenders to a prepared baking dish, cookie sheet, or air fryer basket that’s been lightly sprayed with oil.
Next, drizzle the melted butter over the tenders before baking.

Bake chicken in the oven for 14 minutes. Flip tenders halfway through baking.
For an air fryer, cook for 10-12 minutes. Flip halfway through cooking.

Store any leftovers in a resealable plastic food storage (or glass) container. Then, reheat the baked chicken in the air fryer or oven at 325 degrees F for 7-10 minutes.

I made the Bisquick chicken yesterday. Followed the recipe, cooked in oven. For some reason, the chicken would not brown. Did not look appetizing at all. Then, I overcooked the chicken and ended up with dried, white chicken. I do not know what I did wrong.

This recipe makes delicious, tender, and juicy oven baked chicken tenders. It’s too bad you weren’t able to enjoy them. If your oven didn’t brown the chicken to your liking, then broiling it for 1-2 minutes would have been my recommendation instead of continuing to bake it. If you have a convection setting, I would suggest you use that next time.

Question: Can I use Provolone cheese instead?
Renae says
I haven’t tried using provolone cheese, but give it a try and let me know how it turns out.
